  How To: Multiple Quote Boxes

For some people, they wonder how one quotes another person's post, but divies it up into separate quote boxes in order to make it clear which section or sentence they are responding to. I recently taught someone how to do this successfully and was asked to post up the write up by the member and a moderator to go into the FAQ section.

Lets say someone said, "This, and then that, and then this." Now, you want to respond to all of it but you want to do each one separately so that it is clear as to what you're responding to. How does one do that?

It's actually quite simple, but can be tenuous work, but it has great effect when debating someone. All the special formatting on NICO posts, as you know, always happens when you have stuff in these brackets []. For example, if you want to make something italicized, you have the word with i]word[/i (first and last brackets are left off so one can see the formatting). This coding says to start italicizing everything after the bracketed "i" and to stop it at a certain point you use the bracketed "/i". In basic HTML coding, the "/" is used to end something, although HTML coding uses these guys, <>, where as NICO uses [].

Using the same concept as the italics idea, apply that to the quoting function. Now, if you want to separate it into separate ones, you will have to start doing the coding manually. The easiest way I've found to do it is to quote the whole post of whoever it is you want to quote and work your way through it. By that I mean just work down the quoted post, you'll see what I'm talking about.

You will notice that at the beginning it has quote=member name in brackets when you use the Quote button. When you use the button it will capitalize the word quote, the letter i for italics, and everything else, however, capitalization doesn't matter. The only capitalization that matters really is the person's member name. So to start off, your post would look like this, again with the first and last brackets taken off to show formatting:

QUOTE=member name]This, and then that, and then this.[/QUOTE

So you have the whole post you want to use quoted. You then take the first part you wanted to respond to, find out where you wanted it to stop quoting, and typed /quote in the brackets. That will stop the quote box and it will only quote the text that is "wrapped" within the quote command. You can then hit enter to go to the next line and type your response to that section. Notice I didn't delete anything. All of the remaining user's post that I want to use will now be below what I just typed. Your post will now look like this if you were responding to This:

QUOTE=member name]This[/quote
Your response.

and that, and then this.[/QUOTE

Now you want to move onto the next section you want to quote. If I know I'm going to be dividing it up into many sections, what I will do is just copy the original QUOTE=member part with the brackets. But only that part. I will then put that before the next section I want to use. At the end of the next section, I will again type /quote in brackets, hit enter to drop a line, and type. It would then look like this:

QUOTE=member name]This[/quote
Your response.

QUOTE=member name]and that.[/QUOTE
Your response.

I just keep repeating this process until I reach the final piece I want to quote and I'll delete whatever is left, leaving the bracketed /quote from when I originally hit the Quote button.

Hope this helps some people.

Thanks!
A few questions

Suppose you want to copy a quote from another thread that the same member posted in or even a different member that posted something related and you want to add a portion of that into the current one?
Hope this makes sense?

Lets just suppose cold zero and audtatious posted previous resposes (two of my favorites) on a related post. How does one copy a portion?
Do you just copy their text & then put QUOTE=member name] before it & then put .[/QUOTE at the end?

How do you back out of the current quote to go find the text you are looking for in another post? Do you have to save it first & then come back to edit or is there an easier way?
Sorry if the questions seem stupid but remember I'm older than most here
I'm sure I'm not the only one with questions?

To copy just a portion, you can click on the quote button to quote what they said, then just delete out what you don't want in the quote and close the quote tag.

To do this, if it is in the same thread, you can just scroll down the page (past the smilies) and find the reply you were looking for in the thread view in reverse order. You find the post you want to quote and hit the quote button. If it's from a different thread, however, you have to save the quote and then come back to your reply. If it is in the same thread, you never have to back out of your reply/open a new window or tab.

What I do is utilize the tabbed browsing feature that most browsers have now. If you haven't used it, it's like opening a new window. You can either go to File, New, Tab (File, New Tab if you use FireFox) or just hit Crtl+t. So what I do it's in another post is get my reply going, open up a new tab and navigate to the other thread, copy and paste, and wrap it with the quote function, but manually type it since if you just hit the quote button, it will quote the previous poster.

Telco,

What's the point of bringing back 4 month old threads over non issues?

I find it funny how you can't seem to get Palin off your mind. . .

I hate to bust your bubble but she's married and I'm sure her husband has some nice guns so I suggest you back off.

I think I finally got it?

Thank you all for explaining
