  Nailed a pothole = vibrations @ 65+ ...usual suspects?

So I nailed a small pothole pretty hard coming back from a super bowl party last night. As soon as I hit I thought I felt a little vibration but figured maybe that was just in my head.

Sure enough though, on the way to work this morning, as soon as I get up around 70MPH I feel a pretty strong vibration coming from that tire. I quickly inspected it last night and couldnt see any damage to the tire or rim.

Anyone know what I most likely could have messed up? Just the alignment?

Thanks

From your symptoms, it is prolly not the alignment - more likely a bent rim or loss of balance weight. In either case, take it to a tire shop and have them pull the tire and perform a high speed balance.
Good luck!

There is a number to call to report the pothole and get a form ....but, I don't have it at work. Make sure you note the time and place.
Did you check the side wall on the inside too?

My son hit one on HW 21 that bent his rim and created a bulge on the sidewall. Didn't know this for about a month when I rotated the tire.

I vote for loss of a balance weight.

I vote bent rim. Most often its not bent on the outside but the inside edge.

If its not bent you lost all your weights...not as likely to be a suspension issue.

You still could have damaged the tire even tho you don't see damage.
You need to get it checked and get the alignment checked.
I got two new tires for my son's car today....after reading your post, I checked my son's tire and he hit the pot hole that opened up again due to the rain friday...It had a nice crack int he sidewall...

You need to get the car up and have the wheel and tire looked at - my bet is you've bent the rim - less likely is you damaged the tire. Classic symptoms.

Yep, you guys nailed it. I ripped the wheel off on Monday and sure enough it was slightly bent on the inside and outside. I found a place that is going to true it for me for about 140 and heard good feedback so I hope to be 100% again in a couple of days.

Thanks for the good advice!

Cool, I thought they did a great job. Was interesting to watch.
THey also touched up a couple of quarter size rasberries on the wheel, where the wheel fell over and smacked the driveway.

Sanded it down, and painted to where you can not tell which one they did.
Post back with your observations.

Rimguard Xtreme did a great job! I would highly recommend them to anyone in the NC/SC area.

I cruised into work this AM @ 85-90MPH and my ride is back to where it was before the pothole.

I didnt think that the rim was much out of true based on what I saw on the inside and outside lip but there was substantial damage to the main body of the rim. After he was done, he showed me where he had to repair it. 17 pulls along the inside, almost 1/4 of the tire was damaged!

He had to heat the tire and apologized for the heating process blemishing the polish slightly. I couldnt tell so I was more than happy. Something to keep in mind if you are looking to do this. For extra $$ he could have done more work to make it look "perfect".

All in all, a great deal and good work. I paid 125.00 to have the rim repaired and the shop where he did the work charged me 15.00 to pull the rubber off, put it back on and rebalance the tire - 140.00 total.
